The Sounds of January 12, 1924

The ultimate pursuit of this research has been to create interactive maps capable of displaying performances, venues, residences, and other geographical information vis-à-vis 1924 Parisian musical life. Here you can explore one of the maps we’ve produced; links to others are at the bottom of the page.

In this map, we begin to answer the question, “What did Paris sound like?” By clicking on any of the markers, you can listen to the concert programs performed in various venues on the same night. Note that the recordings you’ll hear aren’t historical; we’re not aspiring to historical authenticity. Instead, this map provides a general sense of the repertory that a Parisian concert goer could have chosen to hear in 1924.
